Zoox is on an ambitious journey to develop a full-stack autonomous mobility solution for cities. Big data analysis and mass simulation are critical to proving the safety of our system. Simulation environment enables the identification and study of potential safety issues before they manifest in the real world. The effectiveness of the safety measures can also be verified and validated without putting public road users at risk.

Our tooling explores corner cases to accelerate driving software development in simulation as opposed to months of on road testing. We build tools and develop algorithms to quantitatively measure the performance of our driving software, extract relevant safety events from driving logs, and conduct large scale simulation. This highly visible work is critical to accelerating the development of AI driving software and launching our fully autonomous vehicle on public roads.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team developing these challenging simulation optimization workflows and analysis tools. The ideal candidate will provide technical leadership, mentorship, project scoping & prioritization, and continuous improvement of our development workflows.

Responsibilities

Manage a team of engineers building tooling and automated pipelines to generate and analyze challenging simulations for our AI stack
Improve processes and drive the team to deliver high quality software tooling in support of the company’s mission
Reach out and work collaboratively with cross-functional partners and stakeholders to successfully deliver projects that significantly contribute to the success of the overall Safety Case of Zoox technology
Mentor engineers and grow the team to achieve our ambitious goals

Qualifications

BS in computer science, robotics, or related technical fields
7+ years of industry experience in software engineering or other modeling and simulation role
2+ years of experience with leading direct reports
Fluency in Python or another object oriented language
Have experience shipping internal scalable applications and distributed systems
Experience with industry tooling and best practices: GitHub, scientific libraries and visualization tools, cluster computing, & CI/CD.
Demonstrated ability to operate in an agile environment and to distill clarity for a team from ambiguous problem statements

Bonus Qualifications

Masters or higher in computer science, robotics, or related technical fields
Experience with the rigorous verification and validation of complex robotics/software systems
Professional experience in an autonomous driving company
Hands-on experience with contributing to a Safety Case of complex cyber-physical systems
Experience with cloud storage, cloud databases, cloud compute, data platforms, event streaming platforms, & data visualization (examples: S3, EC2, RDS, Databricks, Kafka, Looker, Streamlit, or other similar tools)

Compensation

There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $204,000 to $294,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.

Vaccine Mandate

Employees working in this position will be required to have received a single dose of the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine OR have completed the two-dose Pfizer or Moderna vaccine series.
